Newgrange
Newgrange is a Neolithic passage tomb built around 3200 BC, making it older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. It sits just across the county line in Meath, part of the Brú na Bóinne UNESCO World Heritage Site, but for anyone staying in Drogheda it's practically on the doorstep.
Why visit
- Famous for its winter solstice alignment, when sunlight floods the inner chamber through a roof-box above the entrance
- Access is by guided tour only, departing from the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre near Donore
- The visitor centre exhibition itself can be visited without booking a monument tour
Good to know: Tours are run by the OPW and pre-booking online is strongly recommended, especially over summer — walk-up tickets are unreliable and can sell out early in the day.
