Monasterboice
Monasterboice is an early Christian monastic site founded around the 5th century by St Buite. What remains today is a quiet graveyard scattered with remarkable stonework — two ruined churches, a 35 metre round tower and three high crosses carved with biblical scenes.
Why visit
- Muiredach's Cross is one of the finest high crosses in Ireland, richly carved with biblical scenes
- The Tall Cross nearby is the tallest high cross in Ireland at around 7 metres
- The round tower dates from before 1097 and is closed to the public, but still dominates the site
